Impact of Ukraine's membership in the World trade organization and the association agreement with the EU on foreign trade

Abstract

The article examines the impact of Ukraine's membership in the WTO and the Association Agreement with the EU on foreign trade.
The purpose of the article is to study the impact of Ukraine's membership in the WTO and the Association Agreement with the EU on foreign trade.
The dynamics of the hryvnia exchange rate to the dollar for the period 2022-2025 are studied, an analysis of the use of three types of duty rates on goods moving across the customs border of Ukraine is conducted, recommendations are formulated in order to minimize Ukraine's losses and maximize the benefits of joining the WTO and increasing the competitiveness of individual sectors that are of strategic importance for the country and the economy. WTO bodies monitor the implementation by member countries of all provisions regulated by the Statute of this organization. Following the 22nd Ukraine-EU Summit, the parties agreed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the achievements of the Association Agreement in 2021 and to begin consultations on its extension with a view to further liberalizing trade.
Accession to the WTO was the first stage of Ukraine's integration into the European and global economic system, but it occurred against the backdrop of the global financial crisis, the established level of tariff and non-tariff regulation within the framework of the WTO and the Association Agreement with the EU is asymmetric in favor of other WTO member countries and EU countries, respectively. The transformation of the national institutional environment is not complete, which did not allow the country to receive all the benefits predicted by experts from participation in the international trade system.
